BIG RAPIDS – DNR conservation officer Angie Greenway described area fishing as “being a little slow.”

She said she ran into some fishermen at Chippewa, who had combined to catch 12 fish who had also found pockets with bluegills on the beds.

She has also seen signs of successful activity for walleye.

Avid angler Jeff Greene of Rodney has had mixed results, including late last week.

“I fished on Jehnsen Lake on Friday,” Greene said. “I caught many tiny bluegills and a few nice ones. Jehnsen Lake has been a disappointment this year. All the bluegills were spawned out.

“On Saturday I fished at Hillview Lake and did much better. I caught 20 nice ones with only a few too small to keep. There were three bluegills from Hillview that still had eggs.”

Greenway has observed “campground activity is up since campgrounds have been open.”

Turkey season ended locally on May 31.

“It seemed like it kind of (peaked) out at the end,” Greenway said.

But there are many other wildlife related activities taking place.

“Bear activity is up right now,” Greenway said. “We’re getting a couple of nuisance complaints. Don’t leave your bird feeders out. Make sure food is not left out. It’s breeding season for bears.”
