Kroehler and other community leaders appealed to Chicago YMCA in 1909 to start a center in Naperville, according to published reports. Even though they were told a town with fewer than 3,000 residents was unlikely to sustain a Y, the group was given the go-ahead and the community raised more than $26,000 in 15 days for its construction.
