Local youths looking for something to do have several online opportunities, thanks to Litchfield Park Youth Sports.
First is an opportunity to compete for prizes in city of Maricopa esports tournaments.
“Litchfield Park has partnered with Maricopa,” officials announced May 18 on Facebook. “Tournaments are run by Maricopa.” The East Valley city made national headlines when it launched its esports program in October 2019.
Tournament offerings include:
League of Legends, 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays. Open to 25 to 35 players (five players per team up to seven teams.
Rocket League, 6-9 p.m. Fridays. Open to 18 to 30 players (two players per team).
Overwatch, 6:30-9:30 p.m. Saturdays. Open to 18 to 30 players (teams of three or six).
For tournaments to proceed, a minimum number of players must be registered, according to a release. The coach will determine if enough players/teams join to award prizes and let players know in a pre-tournament briefing. Typical tournament prizes are a $15 gift card for first place, a $10 gift card for second place and a $5 gift card for third place. Each member of a team in team tournaments will receive a gift card, the release stated.

Before play begins, a coach will conduct a roll call form the roster and explain how the tournament works and code of conduct. Players with questions on that day’s tournament may ask the coach in the Discord channel. A microphone is required, the release stated.
Activity videos on Facebook
Youth sports also created several videos and posted to its Facebook page, @LitchfieldParkYouthSports, including a scavenger hunt that can be undertaken at home.
Hosted by Youth Sports Assistant Julian Madrid, the scavenger hunt video instructs participants to set a timer and find several items around their home and place in their living rooms, then snap a photo and tag @LitchfieldParkYouthSports for a shout-out.
Visitors to the Facebook page also will find other things-to-do videos, including an exercise video posted in April asking residents to share their own activity videos in the comments.
Several people responded, including Seth Brown of the Oakland Athletics, who shared a do-at-home baseball drill.
