The recreation facilities in Lenexa’s Old Town are on track to get a major overhaul by the end of next year.
The plan, presented to the Lenexa City Council this week, calls for a combination of the Lenexa Community Center and Lenexa Senior Center functions, the demolition of the Senior Center and the addition of more outdoor recreation space.
The Old Town activity center project began years ago
The final plan that emerged from that study called on Lenexa to “create sort of this front porch, front yard” for the neighborhood, Parks and Recreation Director Logan Wagler told the city council on Tuesday.
The project was eventually added to Lenexa’s capital improvement project list, but the pandemic scuttled those plans. Now, the project is poised to move ahead again, with some changes from what was initially planned, Wagler said.
Old Town activity center will have more outdoor space
In keeping with the “front yard” theme, a major focus of the designs proposed are outdoor amenities.
That includes four new pickleball courts, shuffleboard courts, a rain garden, outdoor seating, a ping pong table, a large turf lawn and more shade.
Councilmember Julie Sayers described the preliminary designs as “so much more inviting” than the current community center.
The community center will remain open during construction
The plan, according to the presentation given to the city council, is to complete additions to the existing community center structure identified for senior programming and other uses first.
Then, the current senior center will be demolished, making way for the outdoor amenities.
The building is also expected to be reclad — its external facades replaced — giving it a warmer, more modern appearance.
Construction is scheduled to begin in November, after the Lenexa Chili Challenge, and last about a year.
