Detroit Lions are still the last team to shut out the Green Bay Packers at home - SideLion Report

It was close for almost a half on Sunday, but the Detroit Lions remain the last team to shut the Green Bay Packers out at home.

For much of Sunday’s first half against the New York Jets, the Green Bay Packers did not score. They did miss a field goal, but it didn’t otherwise look promising until their final drive of the half, capped by Mason Crosby’s 29-yard field goal with zeroes on the clock before halftime.

And Detroit Lions fans with some knowledge of recent history rejoiced.

Before the field goal, a FOX telecast graphic said the last time the Packers were shut out in the first half at home was against the Lions in Week 17 of the 2018 season.

So the Packers avoided that, and kept a home streak without being shut out overall going.

On Dec. 30, 2018, the Lions beat the Packers 31-0 to cap Matt Patricia’s first season as their head coach with a 6-10 record.

The stars of the game offensively for the Lions were Matthew Stafford (266 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions), running back Zach Zenner (21 carries for 93 yards and a touchdown, one catch for 30 yards), wide receiver Brandon Powell (six receptions for 103 yards) and wide receiver T.J. Jones (two touchdown catches).

It’s worth noting Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers barely played, with just five pass attempts in the first half before giving way to DeShone Kizer. But a shut out is still notable.

The Lions defense had three sacks in the game, while holding Green Bay to 175 total yards and just 46 yards on the ground. Current Lions running back Jamaal Williams was a second-year Packer then, and he had 24 total yards on seven touches (three catches).

Without knowing for sure, that has to be the lowest yardage Detroit has allowed in a game over the last handful of seasons, at least.

So the streak was close to ending, and the second half against the Jets wasn’t a lot better for the Green Bay offense. But the Lions are still the last team to shut out the Packers at home.
