Oilers' Connor McDavid on lack of penalty calls: 'I just gotta shut up about this' - The Athletic

Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid is shutting down the conversation around the lack of penalties called on him during games.

"I guess I just gotta shut up about this," he told reporters on Thursday when asked if he deserved more calls. McDavid took his own advice and didn't say anything else on the subject.

The 24-year-old's comments come one week after former NHL coach and current ESPN analyst John Tortorella criticized McDavid on TV.

"He complained about it a little bit, that he wasn't getting the calls," Tortorella said. "Just shut up. Don't talk about it. I do think he has to change his game a bit."

McDavid is second in league scoring with 29 points (10 goals, 19 assists) in 15 games. His 19 assists leads the league.

Last season, opponents were called 29 times for impeding McDavid during the regular season, which saw him rack up 105 points in just 56 games. Per Natural Stat Trick, only Senators winger Brady Tkachuk drew more calls — five more than McDavid.

The center didn't draw a single penalty when the Oilers were swept by the Jets — despite playing 211 minutes in the series.
