DRACUT — A suspect is under arrest in connection with a series of recent small fires in Dracut, but the arrest is not connected in any way to a series of structure fires, including one that claimed a life, according to Fire Chief David Brouillette.

The suspect, whose name Brouillette can not release since the case is now in court, is accused of starting a series of fires but none that burned homes or caused injuries.

Additional information on that man’s case was not immediately available from Dracut Police or the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, which is handling the prosecution.

Meanwhile, Louise LaFlamme was pulled from her burning home on Hilltop Road on Jan. 22 and initially taken to Lowell General Hospital. She was later transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital, but died on Jan. 25 of her injuries.

Jennifer Mieth, public information officer for the Office of the State Fire Marshal, said the Hilltop Road fire remains under investigation, but was not suspicious.

“The investigation is ongoing, but it is definitely not suspicious in any way,” Mieth said. “Investigators are focusing on an accidental cause.”

Brouillette said other recent structure fires in Dracut, including one on Wagon Wheel Road just this week, also have no connection to the arrest that was made.

Brouillette spoke about all the fires at Monday’s Board of Selectmen’s meeting, briefing selectmen on the department’s recent activity.

In his report to selectmen, Brouillette said the Fire Department responded to 338 calls for service in  January. Year-to-date, the total is 420. Three of the calls have been for multiple alarm fires, which the chief said is unusual for Dracut.

He praised the men and women in the Fire Department for the work they have done in this time period. And he noted, the department has been able to run fully staffed despite COVID-19.

LaFlamme’s family is running a fundraiser to help them as they recover from the fatal blaze on Hilltop Road. One of LaFlamme’s children survived that fire, but lost everything.
