NEW YORK -- Frankie Montas has not pitched to expectations since being acquired by the Yankees prior to the Aug. 2 Trade Deadline, and now, the right-hander has landed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Saturday, after experiencing discomfort in his pitching shoulder following New York's 7-6 loss to the Brewers on Friday.
Montas had an MRI on Saturday in Milwaukee that showed inflammation, then received a cortisone injection on Monday in New York. Montas’ issue is not believed to be as significant as the one he experienced while pitching for the A's earlier this season, when he was forced to exit a July 3 start. He returned to Oakland’s rotation on July 21.
“I still want to come back and try to help the team in the playoffs if I can,” said Montas, who will be shut down from throwing for 10 days.
In eight starts as a Yankee, the 29-year-old Montas is 1-3 with a 6.35 ERA, having permitted 28 runs and 46 hits over 39 2/3 innings. He is 5-12 with a 4.05 ERA in 27 starts this season overall. Manager Aaron Boone said that he is hopeful to see Montas pitch again this year.
“I think it’s certainly possible that he could be in play for us,” Boone said. “Hopefully this next week or 10 days goes well and we can start ramping him up, but we’ve got to get there.”
Boone had said that he planned to have Montas remain on turn to face the Red Sox this week. Instead, Domingo Germán will rejoin the starting rotation to start on Saturday. Germán has been used as an opener and long reliever since his last multi-inning start on Sept. 7.
Luis Severino is also scheduled to return from his Minor League rehab assignment for a Wednesday start against the Pirates.
“I was resting for 60 days, so I’m fresh now,” Severino said. “I think this is the best time for me to come back. I don’t know if Montas is going to be out for a long time or a short time, but he was a big piece for us.”
The Bombers’ moves at the Trade Deadline have largely not worked out thus far.
In addition to Montas’ inconsistency, outfielder Andrew Benintendi’s return date from a hand injury is unknown and right-hander Scott Effross has been on the injured list, though he may be activated Wednesday. Outfielder Harrison Bader is making his pinstriped debut on Tuesday after a lengthy absence due to plantar fasciitis.
“I just want to be the best version of myself,” said Bader, who grew up in nearby Bronxville, N.Y. “I think [Derek] Jeter said it best: ‘Fans boo because they want to cheer.’ I’m going to go out there and do my best to give them something to cheer for.”
The outlier of those Deadline moves has been right-hander Lou Trivino, who has pitched to a 1.13 ERA in 19 appearances with New York. The Yankees dealt four prospects -- pitchers Luis Medina, JP Sears and Ken Waldichuk, plus infielder Cooper Bowman -- to Oakland for Montas and Trivino.
