Talk about bad timing.
Despite having coveted Kyle Schwarber for years, the Yankees don’t sound interested in signing the slugger now that he’s a free agent.
“Clearly, we would expect him to do damage at Yankee Stadium, whether he’s in an opposing uniform or our uniform,” GM Brian Cashman said Wednesday on WFAN’s “Carton and Roberts”.
But while Schwarber has a lefty swing made for the short porch in right field and would help diversify the lineup, the 27-year-old’s subpar outfield defense means he would likely need to DH in the American League.
There lies the issue, for the Yankees already have $218 million invested in Giancarlo Stanton, whom Cashman said would likely be the DH moving forward due to his injury history.
“When he’s healthy, he’s a beast,” Cashman told reporters of the 31-year-old Stanton before his radio appearance.
The same could be said for Schwarber. He hit 38 home runs and had 92 RBIs in 2019, though he struggled during the abbreviated 2020 season.
Schwarber was non-tendered by the rebuilding Cubs after hitting .188 with 11 home runs and 24 RBIs in 59 games.
He likely would have made around $8 million next season had the Cubs retained him. Now Schwarber is expected to sign a one-year deal elsewhere with the hopes of cashing in next winter.
The Yankees initially tried to acquire Schwarber in 2016 when they sent Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs. They instead landed Gleyber Torres, a Chicago prospect at the time.
