Riyadh 2030 launches new landmark national initiative to increase youth physical activity and reward inspirational teachers - Around the Rings

Riyadh’s 2030 Asian Games Bid has today announced the launch of a new landmark nationwide initiative to increase the level of physical activity amongst young people across Saudi Arabia.

Delivering long-term, tangible benefits, 600,000 students will take part in year one. Growing year on year, the programme has a goal of attracting six million participants by the start of the 2030 Asian Games.

As part of the new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by the Director-General of the Riyadh 2030 Asian Games Bid and Vice President of the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee (SAOC), HH Prince Fahd bin Jalawi bin Abdul Aziz, and the President of the Saudi Federation of School Sports, Ali Mohammed Al Shoailan, the importance of physical education and healthy living will be at the heart of the new national programme.

As schools continue to teach students remotely due to Coronavirus restrictions, the plan will increase the number of sports practitioners and learning materials available as teachers record free, shareable videos of their physical education classes. Teachers who record inspirational lessons will be nationally recognised and students will also be encouraged to record and share their participation.

Riyadh 2030 is driven by a vision of ‘Transforming the Future’, connecting with new audiences and inspiring further participation in sports domestically and across Asia and this new multi-organisational partnership supports this vision. The programme also aligns with the national Vision 2030 Quality of Life goals and the strategic direction set by HRH Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Riyadh’s bid to host the 2030 Asian Games promises to leave an enduring legacy for the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and the new initiative will promote a culture of community sports and physical activity. Maximising the unique 10-year delivery phase, the programme will share the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and spread the values of the Olympic Movement across Asia and beyond.

Riyadh 2030 Director-General and SAOC Vice President, HH Prince Fahd bin Jalawi bin Abdul Aziz, said:

“Inspiring future generations and sharing the positive values of sport is a core commitment of our bid to host the 2030 Asian Games and this new physical education initiative will deliver long-term benefits throughout Saudi Arabia.

“Riyadh 2030 will be a platform for children to participate in sports at record levels and, importantly, this programme will reward the teachers who work tirelessly to increase the levels of physical activity within our schools.

“If we have the honour of hosting the Asian Games, it is our commitment to the OCA to spread the positive message of active lifestyles across Asia right through to 2030 and beyond.”
