With extensive budget cuts to this museum in Fremont county, they had to get creative with how to generate a little extra income while keeping the public interested in history. They have been adding some interest to the museum this year through the Children’s Exploration Series, and the final one is this Saturday.
Big box stores are often the main source of gifts that parents purchase for their children, but the Riverton Museum is hoping to offer parents a local choice for toy shopping while also teaching kids the process of building their own toy.
Megan Ostrenga, Riverton Museum site manager stated, “We actually have a whole children’s series all year long. We do six events all year on Saturdays for kids to come explore history and explore hands on activities here. This is our final one for the year of 2020.”
All ages are welcome, some toys are designed for younger children, and some more challenging toys are available to build for older kids.
“We have Santa coming so you can come meet Santa, he’s making a special stop for us. Our wooden toys, they’re all in pre-packaged kits, so you can decide if you want to build a pirate ship or a truck,” added Ostrenga. Covered wagons and other pre-assembled toys are available to choose from as well.
The Christmas Open House including all of the new exhibits at the museum is this Saturday the 12th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with free admission, with 15% discounts on everything in the gift shop. The Children’s Exploration Series, with wooden toy making, will be from 2-4 p.m. with the toys ranging in price from $2-$10.
“It’s definitely kind of an expansion of their mind to see the process and to physically do it. It’s good to have hands on building, and maybe they’ll want to be a carpenter someday because of it,” noted Ostrenga. Hot chocolate and popcorn will be available at the open house for a donation to the museum.
