Several funeral homes and crematories owned by the Lake County coroner, Shannon Kent, have been shut down and Kent has agreed to cease any such operations in Colorado, according to state order issued on Monday.

Authorities in October found an unrefrigerated body, bags of unlabeled cremains and an abandoned stillborn infant at funeral homes in Leadville and Gypsum, according to case documents.  Investigators also found at least one instance in which a family received cremains for their stillborn child mixed with bits of adult body parts and metal fragments.

Kent owned and operated Bailey-Kent Funeral Home in Leadville; Everett Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Gypsum; Hegmann Funeral Service in Idaho Springs; and Runyan-Kent Mortuary in Fairplay.

On Monday, the Department of Regulatory Agencies issued a final order, revoking the registration of Kent’s funeral homes and crematories.

Kent, a respondent to the order, relinquished registrations to perform funeral and crematory services in Colorado. He also agreed to never file or submit an application to perform such services in the state.

The nine-page order was signed by Attorney General Phil Weiser.
