Idle since Nov. 2, the University at Albany men's basketball team, as well as school's other athletic programs, will continue to be suspended indefinitely after the school Monday ended all in-person learning for the semester because of rising COVID-19 cases in the area.

"The university went into our pause plan," athletic director Mark Benson said. "It’s all remote learning through the rest of the semester, so there will be no intercollegiate athletic activity at all. There will be no practice, no working out, no meeting in person, no intramurals, no club sports etc. In fact, we won’t have any athletic activity, not just for basketball, indefinitely, until we access and begin to monitor this. So the school has gone remote through the semester.”

The UAlbany men last practiced eight days ago. The Great Danes had Nov. 3 off for Election Day, and the university announced Wednesday that someone associated with the program had tested positive for COVID-19, suspending men's basketball activities.

The Great Danes are scheduled to open their season Saturday, Nov. 28, at home against Marist. How long the suspension will last, and how long teams will need to practice before getting up to game speed, are undetermined.

“We’ll work with our health officials to determine what that looks like, a return to competition," Benson said. "A lot of factors go into it, like how have we been not practicing, not working out, etc. We’ll have to make a determination, once we resume, when will be able to start our first competition.

“In terms of facilities reopening, that will be an ongoing assessment as we evaluation the infection rate, on campus, around us. We’ll continue to monitor and access and make a decision on when they can resume.”

Benson said the basketball players are not quarantined, but they must follow the same university guidance as other athletes.

“They will be learning remotely," he said., "If they live on campus, they can stay on campus. They’re not in a situation where they’re quarantined, but they have to be on campus, and there are some rules about visitation and those kinds of things, not having visitors from off campus.”
