The City Shut Down A 600-Person Halloween Party This Weekend — And It Wasn't The Only Huge Bash - Block Club Chicago

CHICAGO — The city shut down multiple large Halloween parties this year — including one that allegedly had 600 attendees.

The city’s Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection cited three businesses that held illegal parties with dozens and even hundreds of people over the Halloween weekend, according to a news release.

The largest of the parties had more than 600 people, who didn’t wear face coverings or practice social distancing, according to the business department.

That party was allegedly held at the Chicago Sports Complex, 2600 W. 35th St. Representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A party with about 200 people at DDC Studios, 6107 W. Diversey Ave., was broken up, as was a third party with about 75 people at 2147 S. Lumber St. People allegedly didn’t wear masks or social distance at those parties, either.

The businesses that hosted the parties were cited and given cease and desist orders that warn them against having parties in the future. The businesses could have to pay fines of up to $10,000.

The businesses were cited for having “large, illegal commercial gatherings that were significantly over capacity and in egregious violation of COVID-19 regulations,” according to the city.

Another party that was set to have more than 500 people was advertised online, but the department stopped that one before it could be held.

The department’s staff investigated 88 businesses and observed more than 70 over the weekend and found there was high compliance with the city’s and state’s coronavirus safety rules, according to the news release. The work was “part of a mission to canvass entertainment districts in the 18th and 19th police districts,” which are on the North Side.

Every region of Illinois is now under “enhanced mitigations” meant to slow the virus’s spread. Chicago and the rest of the state are in the midst of a second wave of COVID-19, and new cases, hospitalizations and deaths are quickly growing, officials have said.

Under the state’s restrictions, Chicago restaurants can’t offer indoor dining or drinking and there are smaller limits on group sizes. Those rules went into effect Friday.

Officials are asking Chicagoans to stop having people over to their home, even if they’re in small groups; to wear masks; to stop any kind of unnecessary gatherings; to keep 6 feet from others; and to wash their hands frequently, all measures meant to slow the virus’s spread.
