Both the explosive and effusive activity at the summit vent increased significantly during the morning of 15 Nov 2020.
The volcano observatory of INSIVUMEH reported that incandescent lava bombs were thrown to up to 300 m above the summit and landed in up to 100 m distance. Associated ash emissions rose to 3 km altitude. As the output of lava increased as well, more intense avalanches of lava blocks and ash from collapsing parts of the flow on the steep flank were generated. These avalanches and small pyroclastic flows reached up to 500 m distance and generated additional ash plumes.
During the next hours, it seems that a new fissure vent opened as well on the southwestern flank, as reports in social media by observers suggest, although this detail has yet to be confirmed by the volcano observatory.
