ALBANY — On a limited basis, UAlbany athletics resumed activities Monday after a hiatus of more than three weeks.
UAlbany athletic director Mark Benson confirmed the resumption, which will start this week with athletes being allowed to participate in strength and conditioning activities, and team meetings through Zoom.
“We feel comfortable that now is the right time to start this first phase of workouts,” Benson said. “We just wanted to make sure that we were very cautious about our return since we had a stop, start, stop already.”
UAlbany was originally scheduled to start offseason workouts on Aug. 31, but delayed that start a week because of concern over large off-campus gatherings discovered to have occurred during the final weekend of August.
After each of the school’s athletic programs started activities on Sept. 7 with numerous safety-related precautions in place, UAlbany shut down all athletic activity on Sept. 11 “as a result of a cluster of positive COVID-19 tests within our student-athlete population,” according to a statement from Benson issued through his department.
