Clark County COVID-19 activity moves farther into the 'high' range - The Columbian

Clark County’s COVID-19 activity level has moved farther into the “high” range for school reopening as the county reported 32 new cases on Tuesday.

The county’s activity level is now 95.60, continuing an upward trend that started in late summer that has ruled out in-person education for all but a few students, according to state guidelines.

The new cases bring the county’s total to 3,688 to date, according to data from Clark County Public Health. There have been 60 deaths from COVID-19, with the last fatality reported on Friday.

There are 25 people hospitalized with COVID-19 and 10 people hospitalized awaiting test results. There are 119 active cases, counting only those that are still in the 10-day isolation period, according to Public Health.

Clark County’s activity level tallies the number of new cases per 100,000 population over a two-week period. Activity levels had reached a high of 99.7 in July, but activity levels had fallen to the “moderate” level of 63.1 in the week ending Aug. 31, raising hopes of more in-person education, before rising after the Labor Day weekend.

The activity level rose from 64.07 on Sept. 7 to 69.4 on Sept. 14; 76.15 on Sept. 21; and 86.18 on Sept. 28.

Under Washington State Department of Health guidelines, schools in counties where the transmission rate is greater than 75 new cases per 100,000 population should keep classes online and postpone or cancel all sports or extracurricular activities.

Small groups of high-needs students, including those who are homeless or those with disabilities, may attend some classes, and four elementary schools in the Evergreen Public Schools district recently began a pilot project bringing small groups of kindergartners into the classroom on a limited basis.

Clark County must remain in the “moderate” transmission level, between 25 and 75 cases per 100,000 residents over 14 days, for three weeks before Clark County Public Heath will recommend reopening for more students.

That three-week countdown cannot begin until the activity level returns to “moderate” levels.
