ALBION, MI — Albion College has canceled all non-academic athletic and co-curricular, in-person activities until further notice due to members of its community testing positive for COVID-19.

According to a message from the office of Albion College President Mathew Johnson, students are now limited to the following locations and activities outside of their residence halls:

  • Attending classes, academic support appointments or scheduled tutoring sessions with faculty or staff.
  • Retrieving mail and packages from the Kellogg Center mailroom.
  • Accessing academic resources/materials from the bookstore immediately before or after classes.
  • Grab-and-go food pickup from Baldwin and the Eat Shop only.
  • Retrieving library resources during temporary limited hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

Activities may continue in a virtual format, the statement said, and all student employment will shift to a virtual format. Student employment that is not possible remotely will be suspended until further notice, the statement said.

All students are required to be tested Oct. 5 and 6 with results coming in as early as Wednesday, Oct. 7, the statement said. Students who do not comply with testing will be temporarily suspended pending participation, the statement said.

The college is conducting wastewater testing with results available by Oct. 5, and new samples will be shipped that day and returned Oct. 6, according to the statement.

“We are hopeful that our quick and thorough response to these most recent test results will allow us to return to our regular activity very soon,” Johnson told MLive Saturday. “Our positive rate remains lower than at most all other campuses that we are aware of.”

As of Saturday, the college has received 9,773 test results and identified 17 positive cases from its first date of testing. Albion College’s population positive rate is 0.85%, according to its COVID-19 dashboard.

The most recent positive cases are a direct result of individuals choosing to violate public health protocols of Albion’s “Together Safely” mission, which includes unapproved travel outside of campus and visiting other residential facilities, the statement said.

Albion College is using Aura, an application that organizes the college’s COVID-19 testing and public health approach. The app asks students how they’re feeling each day and provides regular updates about public health measures everyone should practice.

The app tracks where students go, to a certain extent. If students leave the “campus map,” it will notify administrators, but it will not tell them where the students have gone, Johnson previously said. The campus map covers the college campus, most of downtown Albion, the off-campus equestrian center and other locations near the college.

Coronavirus app doesn’t track students' locations all the time, Albion College president says

Johnson’s statement said administrators continue to be impressed with the concern that most students are illustrating for each other and their community by following public health protocols, but there are still students who are actively choosing to violate those protocols.

Students who clearly and actively violate any public health and safety protocols will be subject to the student conduct process, which includes the potential for suspension and expulsion, the statement said.

“All of us must live the commitment we made, the Albion Community Commitment, in order to be successful,” the statement said. “We are confident Brits can do this — and we look forward to a continued productive, fun, healthy and safe fall semester.”
