A new research study shows that exercise can help women fight breast cancer.
Evidence provided by the study, conducted by the Cleveland Clinic Hospital in the United States, indicates that increased physical activity can greatly reduce the chances of this disease returning to women, who have recovered from it.
Dr. Thomas Bedd, a consultant oncologist at Cleveland Clinic and one of the co-authors of the study, in which more than 1,000 patients participated, said that the size of the benefits observed in light of the increased physical activity was “great”, indicating that the likelihood of the relative risk of disease recurrence decreased. By a rate of between 40 and 50%, while the risk of death decreased with greater degrees. He added that the researchers wanted to collect more evidence about how exercise affects women with cancer, before and after her diagnosis, following their observation that performing a simple exercise like walking for half an hour a day “can make a big difference.”
Dr. Badd confirmed that the patients underwent exercise in conjunction with undergoing traditional cancer treatments, and the data showed that “it is not too late for a patient with breast cancer to start exercising.” He added: “It was the patients, who exercised the least amount of physical activity, who achieved the worst results, while the patients who were not physically active before the treatment, but started exercising after a year or two, witnessed a decrease in the frequency of breast cancer and death rates. Similar to those who did a lot of physical activity. ”
Dr. Bed and the research team plan to continue studying the effect of exercise, but at the same time, he encourages everyone to get moving and to engage in physical activity.
The study was conducted under the umbrella of the National Institutes of Health, as part of a joint project between SWOG Cancer Research Network, Russell Park Cancer Institute, Cleveland Clinic Hospital and others, and was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
Oncology Consultant:
“The size of the benefits that were observed in light of increased physical activity was greater for the women participating in the study.”
