Welcome to the Thomas Index Report for the week of July 13.

With an unprecedented quarter now officially behind us, today’s Index Report will take a closer look at overarching sourcing trends for the top products and services sourced by volume on the Thomasnet.com platform in Q2. We’ll also look at the products and services that saw the biggest increase in sourcing activity in Q2, year-over-year.

While you’re following along with today’s Index, note that these top categories are from the over 70,000 product and service categories on our sourcing and supplier selection platform. I’ll show the top five on each list, but to see the full list of all 20 top products and services, download our free 2020 Q2 Sourcing Activity eBook linked at the end of the video.

Let’s get started with the top five products by sourcing activity volume at Thomasnet.com. Our data shows that in Q2, these were hand sanitizer, face masks, nitrile gloves, medical equipment & supplies, and food products.

You might remember that hand sanitizer first appeared on this list back in Q1 earlier this year, but it’s now been joined by other critical COVID-19-related products. In fact, each of the top five most sourced products can be tied back to virus-related sourcing, either for personal protective needs, medical equipment, or quarantine-related food supplies.

Next, the top five services sourced by volume on our platform over the last quarter were CNC machining, manufacturing services, metal fabrication, plastic injection molding services, and electrical contractors.

Taking a closer look at manufacturing services, the increased activity in this service category is driven by the immense growth of COVID-19 related supplies, such as face masks, shields, ventilators, and other critical care equipment. As medical professionals and healthcare workers fought the spread of the virus, manufacturers and industrial business leaders stepped up in a major way to support the nation’s fight against COVID-19 by keeping production running even in the most challenging times.

Finally, let’s look at the categories that saw the biggest increase in sourcing activity in Q2 2020 over Q2 2019. Topping the list is face masks, followed by hand sanitizer, respirators, nitrile gloves, and disinfectants.
