The oceanfront beach in Long Branch got so crowded early Sunday afternoon that police temporarily blocked access to the sand.
Around 2 p.m., local police officers at one entrance were turning visitors away and advising them to try again in an hour.
Though a sign encouraged social distancing, via staying at least 6 feet apart amid the coronavirus pandemic, beachgoers were crammed together in many locations.
Gov. Phil Murphy on Wednesday signed an executive order requiring people to wear face coverings outdoors where social distancing is difficult to achieve, but many were not wearing masks.
The sand got so crowded that some were putting their chairs on the boardwalk.
Rough waters prevented most from going out too deep, though some surfers enjoyed the waves.
Sunday was a perfect summer day all along the Jersey Shore, with sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-80s in Long Branch.
