MORRISTOWN- As New Jersey restaurants prepare for outdoor dining only, the state declined Mayor Tim Dougherty's request to shut down parts of South Street an expand outdoor dining.
Beginning on June 15, restaurants will be able to open their doors to customers for outdoor dining only, Governor Phil Murphy announced. To accommodate struggling businesses, Dougherty requested that parts of the state road shut down, a request that was rejected by the Department of Transportation
"It's difficult for Morristown [to expand outdoor dining] mainly because our town consists of state and county roads," Dougherty said. "We had to ask the state and county for permission, but we're looking for alternative solutions."
County and state roads cannot shut down unless the state issues a permit to do so.
Together with the town council and the Morristown Partnership, the mayor said he would consider easing restrictions, adding parklets, and asking neighboring businesses to use their properties to expand outdoor dining. Earlier this month, the town waived all the fees for outdoor cafes.
Dining: Restaurant owners give Murphy a less than rave review for allowing outdoor dining June 15
"The phrase 'shop local' has a deeper meaning now," Dougherty said. "More than ever before, we need the support of our residents to keep our businesses going. We will get through it eventually."
Other municipalities throughout North Jersey are also looking for creative solutions to expand outdoor dining and help businesses who lack outdoor space. In Englewood, restaurateurs are hoping to find ways to set up outdoor dining on the sidewalks or even in public parks. In Garfield, the tentative plan is to allow for sidewalk dining, albeit temporarily.
