The Mitchell Board of Education Monday will review the planning stages for reopening school for the 2020-21 school year as well as guidelines for summer activities training programs at its next meeting Monday evening.
After meeting via phone and video conference due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the board will return to a live meeting format. The meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. in the Mitchell Career and Technical Education Academy commons. If planning to attend, the public is asked to wear masks and maintain social distancing practices.
The board is expected to review plans for reopening the school district for the upcoming school year in the fall. After the arrival of COVID-19 this spring, the district discontinued in-person classes and moved to an eLearning program that saw teachers and students meet remotely online to continue their lessons and classwork. That arrangement remained in place through the end of the school year, and now school officials are preparing for the possibility of reopening school buildings to students and faculty.
“It is my intent to open the schools as per the adopted calendar with students physically in attendance,” Joe Graves, superintendent for the meeting, noted in the agenda for the June 8 meeting.
There are three general plans of action for next school year. The first, returning to traditional schooling, is the preferred plan. In the case that it is not considered safe to return to that format, the district would consider a mix of traditional learning with an eLearning hybrid, which would open school buildings to traditional schooling but only with enhanced physical distancing capabilities and practices. The third option is to return to the full eLearning program until such a time as either of the first two options become feasible.
Graves will be seeking input from the board on the matter. He said he plans to bring together a committee of district stakeholders, including a member or two from the board, to move the plans forward and review them for final consideration in July.
The board is also expected to review summer activity training guidelines that have been in place since June 1 for athletics. The guidelines provide procedures for pre-workout screenings, limitations on gatherings, facilities cleaning, physical activity and athletic training and hydration.
