Today’s lineups:

MIN: Mitch Garver C, Jorge Polanco SS, Max Kepler CF, Josh Donaldson 3B, Eddie Rosario LF, Nelson Cruz DH, Miguel Sano 1B, Luis Arraez 2B, Jake Cave RF, Lewis Thorpe P

KC: Whit Merrifield RF, Adalberto Mondesi SS, Hunter Dozier 3B, Jorge Soler DH, Salvadore Perez C, Nicky Lopez 2B, Ryan McBroom 1B, Alex Gordon LF, Brett Phillips CF, Mike Montgomery P

The Twins got strong pitching again from rookie southpaw Lewis Thorpe, and the offense did enough. That’s really all you could ask for. Thorpe and Randy Dobnak are making it a hard call who goes down when Maeda does return.

The Royals scattered four hits against Thorpe, but really never threatened to score, as they only collected one for extra bases. That was an Alex Gordon double in the eighth, and he did advance to third on a groundout before Tyler Duffey came in and slammed the door.

This game, given Thorpe’s effectiveness, was essentially over in the bottom of the first. Jorge Polanco and Max Kepler singled, and Eddie Rosario drew a rare walk to load up the bases. Nelson Cruz and Miguel Sano both drew bases-loaded walks to haunt the hell out of Mike Montgomery and take what was apparently an insurmountable 2-0 lead for the Twins.

The other two Twins runs came in the bottom of the fourth. Jake Cave ripped a double on a 3-2 pitch with one out. Mitch Garver followed up by trading places with Cave, hitting an RBI double of his own. Garver came in on Polanco’s single to put the Twins up by four, and give us our final score early in the game. This caused Mike Matheny to dip into his pen, which makes two straight nights they’ve had to work hard—a good sign for tomorrow.

Notes

  • Thorpe had a great performance—13 K and 1 BB in 7.1 innings, and he only faced five batters over the minimum. He only threw 102 pitches to get there, and now has a 2.29 ERA.
  • Tyler Duffey pitched 0.2 innings and allowed no baserunners. Even more impressively, Taylor Rogers struck out all three men he faced in the ninth.
  • Since it was asked, the Twins have 55 home runs as a team, tied for 6th in the AL.

STUDS:

Jorge Polanco: 2-5, RBI
Lewis Thorpe: 7.1 IP, 0 runs allowed, 13 K, 1 BB
