CLEVELAND, Ohio - Ohio is squeezing a lot of economic activity out of grapes.

A new study says Ohio’s wine and grape industries generated $6.7 billion in economic activity in 2022. The industry also supports 40,399 jobs and generated about $1.9 billion in wages.

The study is from the Ohio Grape Industries Committee, part of Ohio’s Department of Agriculture.

About $3.8 billion of economic activity, and 25,000 jobs, is a direct impact from the wine and grape industries. The study also tries to account for suppliers of these grape-using businesses and the wages spent by their economy — which the study says accounts for another 15,000 jobs and $3.1 billion in economic impact.

The wine and grape industries study looks at every part of the grape business. While some people work in wineries or vineyards, many others are employed in retail, wholesale or even wine tourism.

Ohio has 323 wineries, and that number has grown from 265 in 2016, according to the study. While 179 wineries buy grapes to turn into wine, 144 of them have their own vineyards.

The Buckeye State is considered the seventh largest wine-producing state, making upwards of 1.2 million gallons in 2022. The wineries account for about 1,600 jobs. Ohio also has 21 grape juice, jam and jelly producers, which employ about 1,900 people.

Another 12,000 jobs were in retail, and about 1,100 were in wholesale, according to the study. The industry also supports 8,000 jobs in tourism.

In Cuyahoga County alone, the study estimates that wine and grape industries have created $747 million of economic activity. About 3,000 people work directly in the wine and grape industries in the county, with the bulk of them working in retail or wine tourism.

Across Greater Cleveland, which includes Cuyahoga and the counties it shares a border with, the study says wine and grapes have created $1.5 billion in economic activity and 9,962 jobs.
