NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — The Columbia men's soccer team put together a solid bounce-back performance and earned its second shutout of the season, playing Iona to a, 0-0, draw Saturday morning at Mazzella Field.

The result moves Columbia to 1-4-2 on the season with the Lions now shifting their focus to the beginning of Ivy League play. Iona moves to 1-3-1.

"I think our guys did a good job of coming back off a difficult trip," Columbia head coach Kevin Anderson said. "We got ourselves back into a position where, through the course of a game, we had our moments to create more chances than we had in previous games. We penetrated and got closer to their goal, got shots off and got crosses to create corners, and there was some good quality in it. I thought we created a decent amount from that perspective and that shows you the direction we are going in."

The Lions were coming off a disappointing, 3-0, loss on Tuesday at Drexel — a game in which they played the final 23 minutes with 10 men. The defense returned to form on Saturday, limiting Iona to very few looks from a threatening position.

"We took a posture in a starting point that was a little deeper than usual and nullified opportunities that could be dangerous," Anderson added. "Collodi needed to come up with one or two saves from dangerous scenarios. Everything else was from at least 25 yards out."

Michael Collodi had six saves on the day, most of which were easy for the experienced keeper. He coolly scooped up a redirected shot from inside the box around five minutes into the contest. The senior then spotted a teammate up ahead, which led to Ryan Kipness getting through on the counter. Kipness' strike from 15 yards sailed just off target.

Ten minutes later, Brandon Newman got a shot off through traffic from 20 yards that required Iona keeper Juan Alfaro Monge to dive to his left to preserve the zero on the scoreboard. Alfaro Monge had two saves on the day.

The defensive-minded Lions kept the game in their control throughout. Kipness was the catalyst on the counter twice in the second half, intercepting a pass near midfield in the 61st minute, taking it all the way into the area and firing a left-footed shot that Alfaro Monge deflected away with his body. He got by his marker from a similar position in the later stages, sending a dangerous low cross into the six-yard box that was cleared away just before Evan Kim could get a foot to it.

"If you're hard to break down and you're hard to beat, then that's going to be a difficult night for the opponent," Anderson followed. "I think we are in a good position in terms of where our priorities are. We're asking guys to follow a tactical plan. It's a daily approach to getting better, changing and applying. I'm happy with where we are but we know that there needs to be more continued growth. I am optimistic that will continue to happen."

Columbia will take on Brown (3-2-0) in the Ivy League opener for both teams next Saturday. First kick from Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET.
