HUMBOLDT PARK — Locals have created a series of games and puzzles for kids who enjoy The 606 trail.
Ben Helphand, with Friends of The Bloomingdale Trail, and artist Kayce Bayer teamed up on trail-themed “activity pages,” which are available for download on the neighborhood group’s website.
On the site currently is a maze, a matching game, a word search and hidden pictures similar to the ones in Highlights, a children’s magazine.
All of the games and puzzles are trail-themed. The matching game, for instance, asks kids to match tree leaves and seeds, highlighting trees found along the trail. On another page, activities that rhyme with “trail” are hidden in an illustration of people enjoying the trail.
Helphand said the goal is to team up with neighbors and add more activity pages to the site in the coming months.
The pages are meant to spark creativity — just like the trail itself, Helphand said.
“When you are on the Bloomingdale Trail, before it was developed and to this day, you’ve always been able to see the city with new eyes. Up on the trail, you are in the unique position of being in the city but also floating above it. From that vantage, your mind can wander, exploring everything from the skyline in the distance to the berries growing trailside and bees buzzing in the flowers,” he said in an email.
“The Bloomingdale Trail Activity Pages strives to capture a bit of the way the Bloomingdale Trail gets you to explore and discover new things.”
