The building is all clear after MSP conducted its bomb sweep, according to state police and facility managers.

LANSING, MI - The Michigan Capitol was temporarily shut down due to state police investigating a “threat,” according to a Thursday alert sent out to House representatives and staff.

The message, sent out before 8 a.m. on Jan. 7, says: “Due to a threat early this morning...the Capitol is temporarily closed to all members and staff. Michigan State Police are investigating. You will be notified when the building is re-opened.”

The bomb threat came from a man at 6:40 a.m. into the Capitol Facilities Control Office, according to a statement from the Michigan State Police. Additional personnel and resources were sent to the building “out of an abundance of caution,” police said.

The building reopened after the sweep was completed by 9 a.m., police said.

“This threat remains under investigation, and additional information will not be released,” according to the statement. “Every effort will be made to identify the person who made this threat and prosecute them to the fullest extent the law will allow.”

The Michigan House and Senate are not in session until next week. Staff and members with security access are allowed in the building, according to Matt White, assistant director of facility operations in the Capitol. It is still closed to the public due to COVID-19 precautions, he told MLive.

The closure follows Wednesday’s attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of President Donald Trump aiming to overturn the Electoral College win by President-elect Joe Biden.

Thousands of the President’s supporters converged at the nation’s Capitol on Jan. 6, overwhelming Capitol police and forcing a building-wide lockdown amid reports of vandalism and an explosive device found nearby. Four people died during the storming of the Capitol, according to the Associated Press.

Congress eventually resumed their session later Wednesday and officially certified Biden’s victory by early Thursday. Trump conceded defeat for the first time, promising there would be an “orderly transition on January 20th.
