ATWATER VILLAGE, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Severe flooding prompted the closure of all lanes on the 5 Freeway in Atwater Village and Sun Valley on Saturday morning as a winter storm continued to dump several inches of rain in the area.
Caltrans announced the shutdown of the freeway in both directions in Atwater Village shortly after 7:30 a.m.
The southbound 5 was closed between Los Feliz and Glendale boulevards. Northbound lanes were shut down between Fletcher Drive and Glendale Boulevard.
Just before 8 a.m., Caltrans closed all northbound lanes in Sun Valley between Penrose and Sheldon Streets. The southbound side was shut down from Osbourne Street to Highway 170.
No estimate was given of when lanes would reopen.
Meanwhile, another stretch of the 5 Freeway remained closed through the Grapevine due to heavy snow.
A blizzard warning -- the first issued in the area since 1989 -- took effect early Friday morning in the Los Angeles County mountains, and it will remain in place until 4 p.m. Saturday.
